What to Expect from Judges at Science Fairs

Author: Janis Evanas

Before you begin your science fair project, you need to keep in mind that the fair is in essence a competition. You need to be aware of what the judges will be looking for when they view your projects. With a little forethought and awareness, you can turn an ok project with an average display into the first place winner.

You have heard the term that first impressions mean the most in reference to people. Well it applies to your science project display as well. A neat, tidy display that is well labeled is best. Not too wordy, but enough information so that they don't leave your table without any questions. Progress photos, diagrams or charts that depict your findings are always helpful. Most people are visual. It is one thing to read about it, it is another to see it with your own eyes. Make sure your display board and area are clean and not cluttered. Nothing should take away from your project.

If your science fair project involves giving a demonstration, practice it at home at least three times. You want it to run smoothly. You want the judges to know that you know what you are doing. Make sure you can answer any and all questions and that you know how to use all the tools with skill. Judges want to walk away from your experiment feeling like you are an expert on the subject.

Another thing that judges love is data, data and more data. They want to know what your theory was and if you proved it, how can you prove that it is true. If you disproved it, then what did you find? Perhaps what you discovered by disproving the theory was even more fascinating than the original theory.

So, what you need to keep in mind is that you are the expert, you have data to prove it and you can show it, prove it or demonstrate in a neat and concise manner. Above all this, have fun with the project and at the fair. If you are nervous and uncertain, it will show. You need to have confidence and be proud of all your hard work. It is your brainstorm, so show it with pride.
